it's not all about food
I emailed ‘Amy, my editor last Tuesday morning. I said I wonder if I should take some time off from writing or quit altogether. Here it was three am and I still did not have a clue for my column. But I did get it done and took it into the office on time.
Amy said she had emailed me back. She did not want me to quit. In fact said she liked what I had written. I was renewed. Just throw me a little bone of praise, and I am good for another few weeks.
I went home and pulled up her email. She had taken a lot of time to write, and give me idea after idea. They centered around food. After all, it is supposed to be a recipe column. It wasn’t the food that struck me. It was what she said. A certain dish made her think of her father, whom she misses dearly. Traditions center around the dining table. Certain recipes triggered memories of one kind or another.
What is the first thing we do when we meet someone we haven’t seen for awhile. I don’t know about you, but one of us says, "It’s been too long. We have to get together for lunch."Eating is a very social activity. The first plan when entertaining is what food to serve. Weddings, funerals, showers, meetings. Food. Food. Food.
Right now I have so many memories I don’t know where to start. My dad’s parents came from Lithuania in the early 1900's. They brought with them a steamer trunk or two, and the recipes from the old country. They were not written down. If they were they would have to say, "a touch of that and a pinch of that. My grandma made more great dishes with flour and eggs than you can imagine.
I used to stand on a chair and watch her, always wearing the wraparound apron covered with flour. (I wish I could find an apron like that today.
I remember my mom coming home from work, and having a from scratch dinner on the table before my dad got home. .
My wedding. It was almost fifty years ago, but as they say, "I remember it like it was yesterday." There was the traditional wedding cake. After that, it was Lithuanian all the way: sauerkraut with mushroom, homemade kilbasi ( sausage), beet horseradish, dark rye bread, kugeli (baked grated potatoes with bacon and topped with sour cream) And pastries I can’t pronounce.
. The girls love to tell the story about their kid brother when he was about ten. I used to love to roller skate when I was a teenager. I had a pair of white high-top skates with wooden wheels. My mom made big pink pom poms for them to match my skating skirt. I could never part with those skates. One day little bro found them under the basement steps and would skate in the house.
This particular day Gram had made their favorite, orange spaghetti. He filled a big bowl and went down to the family room with those skates on. He went down all right.
Down the steps bouncing on his rear, spaghetti flying all over, including my new carpeting This is one of those, "You had to be there "scenarios, but it is a hilarious memory and makes for a good story when they all get together.
Some of my cooking disasters I would like to forget. Like when my baking dish cracked and Sunday dinner landed on the floor.
So it’s not just about food.. For me, it’s about cooking with love, wanting to please and ,sharing. And building those all important memories.. I hope this has touched a memory or two for you.
Amy has many memories. I wish we would have had time to talk and share some of hers. Maybe another time. It would be kind of fun to interview the editor.
The cookbook she gave me to look over is The Best 1001 Short, Easy Recipes That Everyone Should Have. It is a wealth of short and easy. I didn’t see any recipe with more than five ingredients. I chose this one to make this week.
GOOEY TURTLE BARS
you will need:
1 1 stick melted butter
2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs
1 12 ounce bag chocolate chips
1 cup pecan pieces
1 12 ounce jar caramel topping
Combine butter and wafer crumbs in a 9x13 inch baking pan and press into bottom
Sprinkle with chocolate chips and pecans
Remove lid from caramel topping and microwave for 30 seconds or until hot
Drizzle over pecans
Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes or until chips melt
Chill for 30 minutes before cutting into squares
(Watch bars so chips melt but crumbs don’t burn)
Enjoy.
