There is an old German saying: "We grow too soon old, and too late smart." I am trying to prove it wrong. I'd rather go with the saying: "It's never too late." I heard 70 is the new 50 with us 'oldsters' living longer. I certainly hope so. I can use the extra twenty years to go with my hopes, dreams, and ambitions. The first being my writing. I have written things here and there over the years. I was even inspired to write a poem or two. Two years ago I got up my nerve , went to the local newspaper and started a Cook & Chat column, titled "From Shirley's Cottage. With this blog, I hope to share with you some of my recipes, hopes, and dreams. Thanks for coming along. Let's go relax on the lake... from Shirley's Cottage.

    THE MAGIC JACKET

Hi all who have checked my blog and found nothing new. Until I can feel comfortable writing my column on the blog, I'll copy a few of my recipes that have already been printed. This one was during the summer.

Love to you from Shirley's cottage
    THE MAGIC JACKET
Last Sunday I was sitting on the old pontoon, feeling king of sorry for myself. I didn't cook, but had filled small cooler with a few snacks and drinks, expecting some of the kids to come and cool off.

But no, they were off and running somwhere else. "That's okay," I thought. "I'll just sit down here and relax." Pretty soon my niece, Corri and her husband Bob, and family pulled up th the pier and invited me to go boating with them. They were going to tube, ski, knee board, and wake board.

That was right down my alley. I love to see the skiers. It takes me back to the days when I was the driver, and the kids learned to ski young, and kept on as they grew up.

Today tubes in all shapes and sizes are the thing. In those days the only tubes we had were real ones off of tractors. They were tied around the tube with a ski rope. No w onder they kept skiing. But this day there were going to do it all, teaching the younger ones.

It was in the boat I saw the magic jacket. I didn't know it ws magic then. It was a life jacket just laying among the others. It wasn't new. In fact it was kind of worn. The kind with a zipper. It wasn't as bad as some of ours that have the greenish spots from putting away wet.

The jacket wasn't used all afternoon, except once by Corri, who did a fine job on the slalom ski. The it was tossed on the floor of the boat among the other newer ones.

Near the end of the day, the younger ones were knee boarding. One was having som trouble staying on. The other one wanted to turn all the way around and do a 360. The were ready to give up. Corri said, "Wear the magic jacket You'll stay on, and you'll do a 360." She said that is the way she can slalom by wearing her magic jacket.

I looked around. Nothing I saw looked magic to me. Bob just smiled like he knew something I didn't. Well, you know it worked. In fact three or four 360's were completed to shouts and applause. How much fun was that!

As we pulled up to the pier, I said, "I'm going to get out of this boat without a hand from anyone." (I can get in, but just need a hand to hold to get out. Old age and creaky knees, you know.) The jacket was handed to me. I put one arm in and jumped out of that boat all by myself like a youngster of 60.

A magic jacket? You bet. That old yellow jacket gives its users confidence to believe in themselves. That they can do it, whatever it may be. That's the magic.

My neighber does not need magic when she is in her kitchen. I am the happy recipient of many of her delicious recipes.
She not only give me the recipes. She brings the samples. This one was waiting for me when I got back from my magic aftenoon.
