it was only a dream
It was Sunday. It was dreary. The dishes were piled up after making good soup and Rice Crispy Squares that didn’t turn out. Beats me how someone who talks about cooking every week can ruin Rice Crispy Squares. They went out with the chicken bones.
Then my phone rang. It was my son telling me skating was on ESPN. He knows I like to watch skating.
That is an understatement. I love to watch skating. Girls, boys, pairs, dance, any kids of figure skating. When I was a kid I wanted to be on that ice, doing all those spins, jumps, and tricks.
I don’t think anyone knew this until now. This is the kind of dream you keep to yourself when you are a shy, chubby kid, and wore high-top shoes because your ankles were so weak you kept spraining them. I had the dreamed nonetheless. .
I beg to differ with those that say you can do anything you want to do, and be anything you want to be. It may start with want and dream, but the talent and the passion have to be there. Not to mention the physical attributes. For me the love was there and the dream.
Sonja Henie. Was my idol. It was the days when the Olympics were held outside. The outfits were short skating skirts and had lots of fur. It was cold outside.
Sonja Henie was so popular she became a movie star . The movies she made had weak stories, but lots of beautiful skating.
Besides Sonja, I liked Dick Button in his prime. Now he narrates the big competitions. Funny how he somehow got as old as me.
In more recent years ,Peggy Fleming was a class act, As was Dorothy Hamil the inventor of the Hamil camel.. . I was a beauty school teacher when Dorothy won her medals. Everyone wanted her haircut, the wedge..
One of out claims to fame in Rockford was Janet Lynn. Her family name was Nowicki. They had several drug stores and we got to know her. She won the bronze medal in one Olympics. She was and is really a sweetheart.
Actually, I like them all. They are passionate and beautiful. My pleasure today is sitting in my living rom and do my skating vicariously through them.
After three hours of dreaming, it was back to reality and dirty dishes, and thinking what recipe I was going to use this week.
I had cleaned out one junk drawers and a recipe card fell on the floor.. I picked it up and thought, "I should have had this recipe last week when I wrote about food, memories .
. It was a recipe Ted’s coach’s wife had given me when Ted was a freshmen at UW. Just seeing her hand-writing brought back the memories of those days; the friendships ,football games and the tail-gate parties.
This recipe makes a nice little gift baked in a baby loaf pan, wrapped in colored Saran, and tied with a holiday ribbon. That’s how I got my first taste.
BETSY’S POPPY SEED BREAD
